Characteristics of a Successful Program Manager

  1. Cross-disciplinary experience.  Having engineering and project management skills are essential for this position. To oversee an entire program, there is a lot of value in having experience with quality, manufacturing, engineering, and marketing.
  2. Leadership.  There are a many ideas and opinions out there. It is important to be able to listen to and align the group in a direction which reduces program risk and increases the likelihood of maintaining the schedule and delivering the anticipated outcomes of the program. This includes building professional relationships in all levels of the company and obtaining expert knowledge of the company’s business processes. 
  3. Candor. Things don’t always go well.  The ability to tell the truth when the going gets tough, concisely present what went wrong, and how it will be addressed, sooner rather than later, is a key ability for this position.

  1. Be an advocate. Senior Staff are fully loaded and oftentimes programs don’t get the attention they deserve.  The program manager should be both a team player for the company and an advocate for their programs in particular.  
Responsibilities
  1. Develop, manage, and improve processes to document the presence of restricted and declarable substances (RDS) in purchased products.
  2. Document the presence (or lack thereof) of RDS as required to meet regulatory requirements.
  3. Understand new regulations being considered globally. Determine the potential impact to products and its markets.  Develop and execute plans to become compliant if needed.
  4. Keep management apprised of material changes to the global regulatory environment and plans to meet regulatory requirements. This typically occurs via written updates and stakeholder meetings.
  5. Stay abreast of new product development projects and work with engineers, product managers and program managers to ensure regulatory compliance at launch.
  6. Support subsidiaries in their product compliance activities.
  7. Ensure that regulatory requirements are considered when developing new products and changing existing products.
  8. Manage third party legal firms to better understand regulations and steps required for compliance if needed.
  9. Manage third party compliance firms that collect information from suppliers about RDS content.
  10. Arrange and evaluate physical product testing with third party labs when required to determine if RDS is in products or their components.
  11. Arrange third party laboratory testing and reports on product functionality to support import requirements internationally.
  12. Program management of new product development, as needed.
Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  1. BS in Engineering, Chemistry or Environmental Science.
  2. At least 2+ in a compliance and regulatory management role.
  3. Ability to manage multiple projects at the same time.
  4. Drive to close compliance gaps, combined with calm to realize it is impossible to be 100% compliant to all regulations for all products.
  5. Experience developing new processes and procedures (quality, engineering, production, etc.).
  6. Confidence and poise to meet with senior staff and regulatory authorities.

 

Desired Qualifications

  1. Technical MS and/or MBA
  2. Prior experience managing compliance with RDS regulations.
  3. Product management or program management experience.
  4. Experience implementing and managing quality systems.
  5. Spanish language fluency
