Two Controllers Sharing a Single MV or PS

Purpose

This relay design is used to operate a single master valve (MV) or pump start (PS) when shared by two controllers. This design prevents sharing commons between the two controllers which violates National Electric Code.

This design assumes the valve common wires for controllers A and B are independent from one another with the exception of the MV or PS wiring.

Operation

The master valve or pump start is normally connected to controller B. The relay is energized when controller A turns on. The MV/PS voltage from controller B is interrupted and is now supplied from controller A.

If both controllers operate at the same time, the system will continue to run as long as the water supply is sufficient for both systems.

What Components To Use

The drawing is designed around components that should be readily available at your local electronics store or from Newark Electronics.

Wiring

For ease of installation, it is recommended that relay sockets are used. The sockets have tabs for mounting into the controller cabinet, and allows easy replacement of a defective relay. The drawing details the terminal screw positions for the specified sockets. This is the top view of the socket.
