Link Starting RC Series Controllers

What This Does

This allows two RC Series controllers to be linked together. The first controller is used to start the second controller. The second controller will not start without the first controller telling it to do so. This is useful when there are multiple controllers on the job and two stations cannot operate together. The second controller will automatically start when the first controller reaches the last station. Do not connect the common wire between the controllers. This violates National Electric Code. If this is already done, refer to the Relay Design For Looped Commons Technical Update.

How It Works

  1. Install a 24 VAC relay (Rain Bird part number 621970) in the second controller. Connect a wire from the relay terminal B to the common of the first controller. Connect a wire from relay terminal A to the last station of the first controller. This will energize the relay when the first controller reaches its last station.
  2. The second controller must have a minor modification made to it. The RED wire that connects to the DAY DIAL microswitch must be cut and reconnected to the previously unused NC (normally closed) terminal.
  3. Install a wire from relay terminal 9 also to the NC terminal on the DAY DIAL microswitch.
  4. Install a wire from relay terminal 6 to the COM (common) terminal of the HOUR DIAL microswitch. The existing YELLOW wire should remain connected to the COM terminal.

Programming

The day and hour dials on the second controller do not affect the operation of the first controller. The controller does not respond to days on and start times set on these dials. The controller may still be operated manually by rotating the station dial counter-clockwise.

Adjust the time on the last station of the first controller to its minimum setting (3-5 minutes). When controller one reaches this station, controller two will start.
