Bandon
Trails is one of three golf courses that comprise the Bandon
Dunes Resort complex, located along Oregon’s
rugged South Coast. Sharing this picturesque venue with Bandon
Trails is the widely acclaimed Bandon Dunes course and the
equally impressive Pacific Dunes course.
Troy Russell is the Resort Superintendent, and during the
construction of Bandon Trails, he assumed the additional
responsibility of Construction Superintendent. Russell shares
his thoughts about the Rain Bird Pump Station installed at
Bandon Trails and about Rain Bird in general.
Environment
“During the summer, we have a very small window to
get good irrigation coverage. Sometimes there is no window,
because the wind doesn’t slow down enough to allow
us to get the job done. So when we were deciding on what
Rain Bird pump to install, we upsized slightly so that we’d
have enough water to efficiently irrigate the course, wind
or no wind.”
Pump Station
“The Rain Bird Pump Station we chose is a 2300-gallon-a-minute
variable frequency drive and has three 75-horsepower motors.
It’s worked out great.”
Irrigation System Compatibility
“I mentioned that Rain Bird support was a big reason
why we chose one of their pump stations, another key reason
was the fact that the entire irrigation system is Rain Bird,
including Cirrus central control. The big advantage for us—and
for Rain Bird—is that by manufacturing their own pump
stations, everything throughout the system is in synch, so
you wind up with a more efficient and reliable irrigation
system.”
Installation and Programming
“Installing the pump station didn’t take very
long at all, a day to put it in place, strap it down and
get it ready to go. We put the pumps in, put the motors on,
made all the connections, it wasn’t bad at all. And
the people from Rain Bird did a great job of explaining all
the ins and outs of programming the system. It’s pretty
easy, there’s a touch pad on the pump station door
that’s intuitive, which makes it simple to get all
the information you need, and because it communicates with
our central control, the system is really efficient.”
