Green
GLENDORA, Calif. (July 12, 2006) – summer
is in full swing, and with it comes the promise of longer
days, weekend road trips to the beach and sunburned skin.
Unfortunately, another hallmark of the summer is the astronomical
increase in the average water bill, and plants that suffer
under the unrelenting sun.
Fortunately, Rain Bird’s irrigation expert Dave Johnson
has a few tips for homeowners to keep their lawns and gardens
looking great for each and every barbecue this summer, without
having to take out a second mortgage to pay their water bill.
Tips To Keep Your Yard Looking Great during the summer heat:
Avoid watering your lawn too much. The greatest waste
of water comes from watering your lawn too much, too often.
When too much water is applied to landscapes, most of the
water is never absorbed into the ground. Instead of watering
for one long period of time, turn your sprinklers on for
several short time periods.
Make sure you turn on your sprinklers at the
appropriate time – between 5:00 AM and 10:00 AM – when
the sun is low, winds are calm and temperatures are cool.
Watering
your landscape in late morning and mid-day is much less
efficient, as irrigation water will be lost due to evaporation
from
wind or the sun. Watering in the evening is not recommended
either because standing water on grass and leaves create
the perfect breeding ground for fungus and mosquitoes.
By watering in the morning, leaves and turf have a chance
to
dry out during the day.
Organize your landscape by zones, as different plants
need different amounts of water. Divide your yard and
landscape areas into separate irrigation zones so that
grass can be
watered separately and more frequently than groundcovers,
shrubs and trees.
Only water what grows. Sprinklers should be regularly
checked to ensure that they water grass and plants, not
sidewalks and driveways. A well-adjusted sprinkler will
spray large
droplets of water, and not a fine mist, which minimizes
water lost to evaporation and wind drift.
When it comes to keeping individual trees, flowerbeds,
potted plants or non-grassy areas looking healthy and
green, drip irrigation will put water directly at the root
system.
When it comes to watering individual trees, flowerbeds,
potted containers, or other non-grassy areas, consider
applying
water directly to the roots using low volume drip irrigation.
This will reduce water waste through evaporation or runoff,
and will prevent unwanted weeds from growing.
Regularly check your sprinkler system to ensure that
everything is in proper working order. A clogged head or
a torn line
will wreak havoc on your landscape and water bill.
Adjust your irrigation system as the seasons
and weather change. Or better yet, install a shut-off device that
automatically detects rain or moisture. These devices are
inexpensive and
enable you to take advantage of nature’s free watering
service.
