RAIN BIRD ANNOUNCES MEMBERSHIP IN
ENVIRONMENTALLY INFLUENTIAL U.S. GREEN BUILDING COUNCIL

GLENDORA, Calif. (January 20, 2005) – In line with its emphasis on water efficiency and its efforts to instill its philosophy of The Intelligent Use of Water™ into all of its business practices, Rain Bird Corporation announces its membership in the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC), an organization renowned for setting environmental precedents among businesses nationwide.

Regarded as the nation’s foremost coalition of leaders promoting environmental awareness throughout the building industry, the USGBC supports the construction of buildings that are environmentally responsible and that perform to their full, profitable efficiency. One of this group’s main initiatives is to promote Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED®), which is a voluntary, consensus-based standard for developing efficient, sustainable buildings.

Several environmental factors contribute to the classification of a newly constructed building as being LEED-compliant. These factors are each assigned points, with five out of a possible 69 points pertaining to water efficiency. Two of these five points relate to irrigation and are designated to “water efficient landscaping.” As a member of the USGBC, Rain Bird will work with other council members to develop LEED requirements and resources. Rain Bird representatives will also work closely with other landscape industry professionals and research organizations to educate others on how buildings’ irrigation systems can be designed to use water efficiently.

Many of Rain Bird’s irrigation products can help a site acquire LEED points. These products include controllers, pressure regulating devices, high-efficiency nozzles, automatic shut-off devices and drip irrigation products. The use of non-potable water is crucial to earning LEED irrigation points. With the belief that the use of non-potable water is critical to safeguarding the earth’s limited supply of potable water, Rain Bird has developed an extensive line of products that are designed especially for use with non-potable water.

“Rain Bird has been a supporter of USGBC and LEED standards for some time. It is a great honor to now be a part of an organization promoting these high environmental standards,” said Ron Wolfarth, director of Landscape Irrigation for Rain Bird. “LEED is in sync with our Intelligent Use of Water philosophy and with the products and services we offer. Rain Bird is able to participate with LEED in many capacities – be that as a manufacturer of products that help achieve LEED irrigation requirements or as an ambassador of the program by helping to educate landscape architects and irrigation consultants about the benefits of LEED.”
